| Hyperekplexia is a rare neurological disorder that causes an exaggerated startle response
People
with hyperekplexia startle easily and intensely. Sudden movements,
sounds, touches, or anything unexpected can send them jumping and
falling to the ground. Voluntary movements are impossible during these
episodes. There are other symptoms of hyperekplexia as well, including
muscle stiffening, stiff legs and apnoea. There are many cases where
patients are misdiagnosed with epilepsy or other conditions and therefore do
not receive proper treatment.
The Hyperekplexia Society was
created to bring the world together. We are seeking members and hoping
to provide support to one another. Having a rare disorder can feel
isolating and overwhelming. It can make a world of difference to speak
with someone who understands, and can laugh or cry with you. It can be
extremely frustrating to ask questions that your doctors can not seem
to answer. That's what this site is all about. We want to know you,
share with you, and feel hope in the midst of chaos.
Our goal is to raise awareness and
educate everyone. Our group
is working with researchers in the UK who are researching into the genetic causes of hyperekplexia at Swansea University, Wales.
